Subject: [*] A Chinese ink painting by Zhou Jun turned into a 698x689 startup
screen
Hello, asian art lovers:
Zhou Jun is a Shanghai born (1955) chinese ink painter, who
I happen to know because he now lives in Nijmegen, the
Netherlands, like I do. ZJ belongs to the elite circle of
painters that completed the central academy for fine arts
in Beijing.
This is a scan I made of a 10x10cm reproduction of a 53x53cm
"free style" ink painting by him depicting a young woman
transporting fruits.
It measures 698 by 689 pixels and is in 8 bit colours.
In deBINHEXED and unSTUFFed from it occupies 497KBytes.
The scan only approximates the original, but still makes for
a nice startup screen I hope you will enjoy!

CIconButton CDEF 1.0
====================
The CIconButton CDEF is a custom control definition procedure that allows
developers to elegantly and simply included "icon buttons" in their
applications. These icon buttons are built from one or more standard 'cicn'
resources. The CDEF works under System 6 & 7, is sensitive to multiple
monitors and monitor depths, and works with or without Color Quickdraw.
Mouse tracking can be sensitive to the cicn mask for non-rectangular
controls.

This is a game developed for the Newton MessagePad that features arcade-like
animation.
Incoming! 1993 Gravity. All Rights Reserved.
Incoming! is released as freeware, but is not public domain.
This release is 0.99.0b.
Incoming! was created as a design and programming test on the Newton.
Basically what we wanted to do was see what kind of things could be done with
arcade-like animation. This game is more of a programming demo for us then
anything else, but we thought other people might find it entertaining.
Premise:
Based on Missile Command, your mission is to defend your cities from waves of
ICBM's. This is accomplished with the defense missiles you have. Because of
tracking stations already destroyed in the war, you can only track two of your
missiles at once. This means you'll have to choose your shots wisely. You
can't let the enemy missiles get too close, or you won't be able to detonate
one of your defense missiles. Enemy missiles are intercepted by being caught
in the nuclear cloud formed when you detonate one of your defense missiles.
Anything caught in these clouds is evaporated. The enemy has ICBM's and Smart
Bombs in their arsenal. Smart Bombs know how to avoid the nuclear clouds, so
unless your shot is timed correctly, you won't destroy them. Your mission is
to defend your cities as long as you can.

Subject: [*] Mangia! demo
This is a demo version of Mangia, the best cooking/recipe program for the
Macintosh that I've ever seen. It lets you create recipes, sort them, move
them into different cookbooks, scale them, and so on. It also helps you
create menus, figures out shopping lists, and even organizes the lists by
section of the store. It's highly customizable, which is good, but it comes
with a huge dictionary of ingredients. I've also included one of the two
recipe files that comes with the shipping version, Mangia Miscellany.
Eventually Upstill Software hopes to have numerous electronic cookbooks
available, and if enough people on the net use it, we could create some
net.cookbooks as well. This demo is fully functioning for two months (it
expires on Sunday, December 26th, 1993), after which you should think about
getting the full version. It's about $50 and has a unique and fun manual,
along with another recipe file that's five times larger than this one.
Enjoy!
cheers ... -Adam

Subject: [*] son of SUMMARY: Is the Apple 8*24 GC video display board worth
something?
The summary that I posted posted in Info-Mac and comp.sys.mac.hardware a few
days ago ("SUMMARY: Is the Apple 8*24 GC video display board worth
something?") stirred a few more comments that relativize the very negative
opinions that were expressed.
In short:
The card can be used as a good non accelerated 24 bits color card if it is
used with the proper drivers (8*24GC 7.0.1 driver and "Cache On" extensions).
The possibility of extending its GWorld memory (with the same SIMMS as for a
MacIIfx) makes it useful for some applications. Newer versions work with a
832x764 pixels 16" monitor.
As the price that I was quoted (400$ second hand) is still more than the
standard 24 bits card (330$ list price in Switzerland), I won't buy it.

Subject: [*] Text track sample movies
In the Infomac Digest V11 #210, Gordon Werner (flypba@aol.com) gave us all
a valuable tip on how we could at last get at that text track capability
that's been lurking in QuickTime since version 1.5. Inspired by his
suggestion, I set about adding text tracks to two movies I'd made a few
days earlier, and I now submit these as examples of how you can use text
frames and subtitles.
The video sections of both movies are Cinepak-compressed, so you should
have 16-bit colour or better, or else use 256 greyscales. I've also
included some documentation giving my own recipe for creating text tracks
with Movie Player and listing some pitfalls I encountered. For the text
tracks and my documentation to display properly, you should have the
TrueType versions of Geneva and New York installed.
I don't claim these movies to be models of thespian prowess or cinematic
technique - all they are is me and a friend messing about in someone's
office actually - but I do hope they inspire you to get started with text
tracks yourself. I realise this is a rather large submission for what it
is, and will probably only be downloaded by those with fast and cheap net
access, so I'll make my documentation available separately if you write me.
PS: Apologies to Gordon Werner - in my documentation I stupidly forgot to
delete the words "sorry I don't know your real name".

Subject: "Get Info" Problems
Greetings, all...
I'm having problems with the "Get Info" command on my Mac. For some reason,
doing a "Get Info" command on any kind of volume (HD, Floppy, Trash, etc.)
will not execute. This is a major inconvenience when it comes to icon
editing, turning off annoying trash messages, etc. Here are the
extensions/CPs
I'm using that could possibly be causing a problem:
CONTROL PANELS:
Extensions Manager SuperClock! After Dark
BeHierarchic (Patched to v1.0.6 to work with MenuDropper)
ColorSwitch Decor Default Folder 2.42
FaxMenu (FaxSTF) Greg's Buttons MenuDropper
MountImage PopChar PowerBar
PrintChoice SpeedyFinder7 System 7 Pack! Extras
TrashMan Controls
EXTENSIONS:
Disinfectant Bomb Shelter FaxMonitor (FaxSTF)
FaxPrint (FaxSTF) Hardware System Update 2.0.1
ICON Wizard INIT JPEGView JFIF Preview SoundManager 3.0
TrashMan Engine Type Reunion
In addition, I've got all sorts of standard Apple and Adobe stuff that doesn't
cause problems and I can't live without. Course, I can't live without any of
this other stuff, either...
I seem to remember problems with SpeedyFinder7 being talked about...any clue?
Thanks for your help, everyone!

Subject: .PPD file for IBM/Lexmark 4039 printers
Our lab recently got an IBM 4039-16L printer and I am looking for the
appropriate .PPD file to use it with the LaserWriter 8 drivers. The
printer came with software that installs a chooser option to print to
it, but it appears in the Chooser as another option, not under either
the old (7) or new (8) Laserwriter driver. The resulting Print Setup
and Print dialog boxes, however, look like this is based on the old
drivers. One of the floppies that came with the printer's Appletalk
interface has a file called IBM4039.PPD, but when I try to select this
with the LaserWriter 8 setup, I am told it's not a valid Printer
Description file. It IS a moderately large postscript file, but
apparently not of the right sort for LW8. I looked on ftp.adobe.com,
but there seem to be .PPD files only for older IBM printers, such as
the 4029 series. Asking IBM has, so far, yielded no plausible leads.
A pointer to the right file, if it exists, would be much appreciated.

Subject: 1984 Commercial (Please Stop!)
Oh why do I never learn? My seemingly innocuous response to the query
about the Macintosh "1984 Commercial" yielded a small host of requests
to get a copy from me. Remember? I did say it was a bit of a trial to
transfer that big a file. If memory serves, Richard Lim is the only one
to actually get the thing from me. It took the better part of a day to
get it, after a bunch of time consuming false starts.
Richard only got the file after I converted to hqx format (adding 1/3 to
its already mind-numbing size). I think he also used NCSA Telnet to get
it. The most recent supplicants used Fetch. Death. Fetch's gets died at
about the 6M point. I tried a Fetch put. Seemed to go, but the bytes
transferred were maybe 5M more than the file size, and it didn't really
do it. Dead meat.
I got a tad annoyed at NCSA Telnet's ftp host capability at that point
and snagged the new FTPd program. Only took me two hours to get it sort
of working. I seem to lack some pre-supposed knowledge. Even after it got
up, it was slower coming than Christmas. From the Tech command-line ftp
under VM/CMS and from Fetch. So slow I thought my client machine died.
Forget about that puppy.
No mas! If God had meant the "1984 Commercial" to be ftp-able, She would
have given us better tools. I can barely afford the disk space for that
file. I cannot afford the time to diddle with y'all trying to send it
over the net. But only since the problem seems intractable. I diddle all
the time when I make progress and learn something.

I wrote earlier about having both modem and printer ports go out of
action simultaneously on my Mac IIci. It failed the local tech's loopback
test, and he suggested a $750 motherboard replacement. However,
this newsgroup came to the rescue:
Bob Beason <BEASON@uno.cc.geneseo.edu> suggested zapping the PRAM, since
PRAM memory corruption can, he explained, cause serial port problems.
af877@freenet.carleton.ca (Harry Dodsworth) suggested buying a NuBus board
(QuadraLink or Hurdler) which -- with its software -- replaces the missing
serial ports.
In the case of my IIci, PRAM-zapping didn't help, and it still isn't clear
what caused the trouble... So... I ordered ($202 incl. S&H) and received
(in about 12 hours) an AE QuadraLink from MacWarehouse. Works fine by
"shadowing" the printer and modem ports to the new ones.

SendPS can be made to work with system 7.0 and 7.01 at least, by moving the
laserwriter extension out of the extensions folder and putting it one level
up i.e in the system folder loose. SendPS v.2.o doesn't know about the

Subject: Cheap 8-bit video card for 660AV?
Hi all,
Well, I finally broke down and got a Centris 660AV (no, not a Quadra
660AV, I like being different ;-)). It's up and working, but not yet
configured perfectly. One stumbling block is that I need a cheap 8-bit
video card to use with the used Apple 12" monochrome monitor I picked
up for $75. I have the monochrome monitor running off internal video
now, but once I get a main color monitor, I want to use the mono monitor
as a second screen, just as I've become used to on the SE/30 with
its extra color monitor.
So, does anyone have any recommendations for decent cheap video cards
that will fit in a Centris 660AV (7 inches max) and that can drive
an Apple 12" monochrome monitor? It doesn't have to be anything fancy.
Many thanks!

Subject: Client file sharing (Sys 7.1) problem:: notification keeps popping!
Figure the following: Two macs, System 7.1 (it works with, at least, a PB 160,
a Mac II and an SE/30). One accesses the other through "guest" file sharing
(I use the "AutoGuest" extension).
When the server goes belly-up for any reason, the client received
the message "The shared disk "Quark" from the fileserver "Deep Space Nine"
is no longer accessible" or something to the sort (it varies depending on a
crash or a shutdown).
Fine so far! However, the following notification keeps popping up,
every few seconds in the Finder: "The shared disk "Quark" could not be
accessed due to an error -1070". This message is repeated ad nauseam until
I reboot (not a particularly time-saving experience on my 14/80 PB 160 with
three rows of extensions!).
I thought the culprit is "AutoRemounter", a PowerBook-only control
panel, but no. The problem keeps on going without those two.
However, when the client is System 6.07 or System 7.0, the problem
does not exist! I get the message that the server is no longer available,
the shared disk gets flushed and I can keep going like nothing happened!
I would like to know if anybody else has experienced this problem, and
if there is a solution.

Subject: Eudora for the masses
Hello,
I am investigating the feasibility, advantages, and disadvantages of making
pop mail programs such as Eudora on the Mac and NuPop or PopMail for PC
users available to our students (around 25,000) on floppy disk. I was
wondering if those out there that have gone through this at other
universities could provide some insights on several issues or share how
their campuses have dealt with providing email to all students, faculty,
and staff.
The first is how do you do the distribution? Do you use floppy disks or do
students log into some central server? If they log into a server, is it
available campus wide and do you use one for both Mac and PCs or one for
each platform? If you distribute on floppy disks, how many do you prepare
and how long does it take to do so? Do you configure and label them for
the students or have them do that? How do you get the disks to the
students? Do you have to provide training sessions or is just giving them
the disk and an instruction sheet usually enough?
Since it seems that pop mailers are much more efficient for the mail
servers, since they only connect and consume CPU resources to transfer
messages, I am wondering if anyone has any kind of data or feedback to
compare the numbers of users that could be accommodated through pop mail
programs versus the number that could be handled through traditional
terminal connections. For those who campuses rely primarily on pop mail
programs, how many users are on a given mail server and what kind of
hardware is the mail server (make, model, RAM, disk space)? This seems to
be especially true for handling dial up traffic with the expense and
general scarcity of modem lines. Does any one have similar feedback or
comparisons for the number of users that were able to be handled with pop
mailers (using ARA, SLIP, PPP, or plain serial connection like Eudora and
NuPop can) versus having people dial into unix or VMS hosts with standard
terminal emulation software?
Also, since the other great benefit of pop mail programs is their more
intuitive and thus easier to use interface, does anyone have any feedback
or data to support the notion that people are more likely to utilize email
more heavily with pop mail programs than unix or VMS based editors. This
seems to be true from my own experience but I'm wondering if any one has
ever verified it by tracking email traffic (not just the number of accounts
but something that better measures utilization).
Again, for those who's campuses rely heavily on pop mail program usage,
what percentage of the students, faculty, and staff have email accounts?
Has this led to a greater sense of access to the faculty, staff, and
university services for students? What have been the other outcomes, both
positive and negative.
Sorry for the twenty questions, but any insights people would like to share
would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to respond directly and I'll post
a summary to the list later.
Thanks.

Subject: Eudora Tricks
Good Morning,
For those of us in the position of helping and supporting people using
Eudora to access email on unix and VMS hosts, here are a couple of tricks
for dealing with common problems that are probably worth remembering.
For people using Eudora to access mail on a unix host, there are two common
outcomes when something goes wrong when Eudora is in the middle of
transferring mail. The first is that if the transfer is canceled after
Eudora has logged into the pop server, only part, if any, of the messages
may have been transferred, and appear to have been lost if they log in to
their unix account via Telnet or other terminal method. It turns out that
the messages have merely been moved to a pop server temp file (from their
incoming mail spool) and will transfer fine the next time they check for
messages with Eudora.
The second unix problem comes when something goes awry in the middle of
transferring messages leading subsequent attempts to check for messages to
return the infamous "Mail drop locked or busy" message. This can easily be
remedied by having the person log into their unix account with Telnet or
other terminal method, and typing ps -x at the system prompt. This will
bring up a list of the active processes and look something like:
spot> ps -x
PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND
2490 w7 S 0:00 -tcsh (tcsh-6.04)
1760 0:00 popper
2590 w7 R 0:00 ps -x
You then need to have them type in kill and the process number to terminate
the pop process, such as
spot> kill 1760
After that, Eudora will happily transfer messages once again!
The most common consequence of something going wrong when transferring
messages from a VMS host is that messages appear to get lost. It turns out
that they merely get transferred to the "Mail" directory, out of the
"Newmail" directory, and since Eudora only looks at the "Newmail"
directory, it no longer sees them. Again, if they log into their VMS
account with Telnet or other terminal method, they can view the "lost"
messages with a dir command of their Mail directory.
In our group, I seem to get some form of the above problems about once
every two or three months and thought that a summary might be useful to
others.

Subject: Font Printing Differences
Have you ever noticed that some of the characters in the Symbol font
print differently on the StyleWriter than on the LaserWriter?
It's irritating the s..t out of me. How can I get the two to match?
I thought of making a copy of the Symbol font and calling it something else,
so that the LaserWriter wouldn't use it's own internal version of Symbol.
This failed however, because apparently the font file name doesn't affect
the font name within the file. I then also tried ResEdit to no avail.
Am I correct to assume there is a different version of Symbol built into
the LaserWriter? How does one _really_ change the name of the font within
the font file?
Typically, I pre-print all my documents on my StyleWriter to make sure
that all the formatting and such is perfect, and then I go down to Kinkos
to print the documents on a LaserWriter.
Is anyone else having this problem?

I too, have experienced the sudden freeze-up of my Duo when in the dock.
I can't detect any sort of common situation which causes this to happen,
and I believe I remember this issue was addressed on the digest, and that
the ADB mouse was to blame. Is this still in the hearsay category,
or should I be hounding Apple about this? Particulars are: Duo 230, 12k

However, may I point out that gopher also often says that "the system

can't tell gopher to do a bunch of things as it is menu driven, not
command line driven.
Please do reconsider the fsp option in addition to your current

I agree with and support Alan's arguments. An FSP command-line interface
permits a greater automation, allowing downloads at off-peak hours. Having
played with the configuration of several succesive releases of the FSP

(HP's printer manual is a comic. I was able to borrow one (German edition).
It merely states that there is such a feature but it actually says less

Although BBEdit is a text editor, it can do most of these things; drop
a file on it, and you can use the paging keys on the extended keyboard
to page through it, or Cmd-up- and -down-arrow. It also translates
linefeeds automatically, and you can set a preferred font and size for
viewing. You'll also be able to print your files, as well.
BBEdit 2.5's support of XTND makes it possible to read the text from
RTF-format files, as well.
BBEdit Lite is free for anonymous FTP from sumex.stanford.edu, in
/info-mac/text, and from world.std.com, in /ftp/pub/bbedit. A demo
version of BBEdit 2.5 is available from the same locations.

Way to go, Gordon! Talk about a leech! Who is this guy?
Another useful MBA? This is the sort of crap that we don't
need. It's a waste of InterNet bandwidth and is most
certainly going to bring the impending commercialization of
e-mail that much sooner. Ultimately, we'll have to pay cash
for each message sent or received, probably by the size of
the message. (Take a look at cellular phones. You pay for
connect time whether sending or receiving.) The *last* thing
I want to pay for is JUNK e-mail.
Actually, isn't there some sort of rule about transacting
commercial business over the InterNet? Don't know but
thought so. Product announcements in the digest are
probably in the grey (or gray) area but are not nearly as
offensive as junk e-mail.
If this yahoo, or others, wants to make a fast buck off
somebody else's hard work and * at our expense *,
I say get rid of him!
Guess that Gordon was right that
"... subscribers would be angered ..."
BTW, reply to this message but don't send _me_ any junk
e-mail. You can hear the firebrick being stacked all
around me.

Subject: Lazy PowerBook ?
Many thanks to everyone who responded. The consensus was that the processor
cycle is the culprit of the system slowdown. Perhaps the key piece of
information was that you have to press the Option KEY before clicking on
the Options BUTTON in the Powerbook control panel. Only that way does the
resultant window include the two buttons which enable/disable the processor
cycle.
The Spanish version of the user manual does not indicate this, which is why
I had never seen those controls (even though they do appear in the
pictures; I had thought they belonged to an earlier version of the control
panel). Maybe that information was lost in the translation*.
Also mentioned was the fact that enabling filesharing will slow down the
system somewhat, even if nobody else has mounted your machine's filesystem.
Naturally, when someone does, the slowdown will get worse. ("filesystem"
??!? Goodness, my Unix is showing....;) )
I am still not convinced with the algorithm Apple employed to determine
when to slow the system down. I feel that a slowdown is NOT appropiate when
the machine is right in the midst of a CPU-intensive operation; in this
case, it is almost certain that the user will NOT be generating any input,
since he/she is waiting for the machine to finish the work. A slowdown in
this case is definitively counterproductive and frustrating. Two examples
of this would be while running a complex macro in Excel or while
downloading/decoding a hypertext page with inline graphics from the WWW in
NCSA Mosaic (I've had the machine slow down to a crawl in both cases).
Thanks again for your kind and prompt help.

Those of us living in Latin America have really resented the fact that
Apple seems to think that Spanish is for Spain and period. I, for one, have
opted to use the US version of the system software, rather than having to
suffer thru the Spaniard version of the same. Hey, people, the (potential)

is include a Latin America country code, like IBM, Microsoft, Compaq and
others have done in their equipment and software.

Subject: LW8 Spool Somewhere Else?
Hi,
Well, I got my hands on the LaserWriter 8.1.x and installed it. Great
Stuff!
Great, that is, if I don't print large jobs.
The Problem:
I've partitioned a large hard disk so that my startup volume is
only 30MB. The rest of the 520MB drive is divided up amongst 3
other volumes. This was done in the superstitious belief that I'd
save space and speed up system duties.
The LW8.1 spools my QuarkXpress jobs to the startup disk and then
prints. However, my QX jobs are upwards of 40MB a pop, and I keep
getting "Disk Full" errors since there's no room on the startup disk.
Before I go about re-partitioning my disk (with the jungle of details
and hassles that that represents), I'd like to know if anyone can
help me figure out a work around:
1) Can I redirect WHERE the LW8 driver spools to disk?
2) Can I stop it from spooling?
3) Can I make it spool to RAM? (I've got 70MB to spare)
I'd really appreciate any help with this!
TIA,
Chuck

Also fixed is an inline asm construct which was causing problems

Lastly, support was added in PPP to loopback packets which are

Help!!
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with this problem. Here is what is
happening. We have 7 computers on an Ethernet network. We recently hooked up
the 7th which is a centris 650, the is one quadra 700, and the rest are mac
IIci's. We are having major printing problems. When trying to print from
Quark, the users are getting an error message that there isn't enough memory
to
print the file. The only computer this doesn't happen on is the Centris.
Things I have tried:
1. Upgrading all laserwriter drivers to 7.1 so all computers have the
same version.
2. Installing new system software to make sure it was not damaged.
3. Bumping up the memory in Quark.
4. Bumping up the memory in Print Monitor.
5. Turning background printing off, which causes an error message
-108. Apple tells me this is the heap space is full but how
can this be if I am using system seven.
Another change that took place before the printing problems was we installed a
QMS Colorscript 230 onto the Ethernet network.
Please email me back with any suggestions. We are really in a bind here.

Subject: MacTCP (2.0.2) woes, once again.
Sorry for boring the audience with this repeat but it REFUSES to go away....
I've upgraded MacTCP from 1.1 to 2.0.2 in a Centris 650 with a Nubus
Ethernet card. Since the thing talks Ethernet directly, the Gators and
FastPaths in the place can't tell it what IP address to use. If they did,
I'd have to set MacTCP to EtherTalk and I'd have to bounce the packets off
the chosen router, adding an extra layer of software to the path.
So, I added the card's address and related info to our main and backup
bootp servers, hoping the thing would get its address there. Well, the
server logs report the incoming bootp request, as well as the reply,
stating the correctly assigned address; however, MacTCP just hangs there
until it times out. It never processes the bootp reply, even though it is
getting sent out on the wire. Both bootp servers send out extended bootp
replies.
I have tried reinstalling a fresh copy of MacTCP, trashing the Prep and DNR
files, starting with extensions off, etc., to no avail. What can I do to
get this cantankerous bit of code to work, short of (horrors !) setting a
static address ?
Thanks for your advice.

Subject: Replacement trackball retaining rings for PowerBooks
Would anyone know if you can acquire replacement retaining rings for the
trackballs in the PowerBooks ? My PB 180 first broke off one of the locking
tabs the sixth time I removed the ball to clean the rollers (about 5 months
after I received the unit). When I reported the failure to my local dealer,
he said the part was not under warranty, since I had removed it to clean
the rollers: I was supposed to take it to them for that procedure (even
though the manual clearly states that cleaning the rollers is something
done by the user). He also said that Apple replacement policy dictated that
the whole part (i.e., the whole trackball assembly) had to be replaced, at
a cost to the customer, for a total of $135. plus tax. I ended gluing the
broken bit of plastic with Liquid Solder...
Now, the OTHER tab broke off and I know I'll have to replace the whole ring
sooner or later.
Anyone know a supplier and cost of the part ? From the looks of the fragile
part, I better buy half a dozen of the things !
Thanks in advance for your help.

Beware this is the demo/student version (i.e., it is limited in the number
of components, mainly transistors, it can handle). However, it will give

Hi
I use the utility called ShowPages 1.4.1 from Sumex-aim.
It can download PS files to the LaserWriter, and it can print text files in
a tiny format (which I use to print the Info-Mac Digest)
All under system 7.x.

Has the Mac world yet been sniped by yet another corporate type application?
I am looking for any leads on SNMP agents for the Mac platform. I need a
simple inexpensive (retail <$1K) agent that can understand MIBs and provide
basic network management and troubleshooting. Disappointingly, there is a
multitude of products for Windoze, some fairly robust and inexpensive

There is a product from Apple known as MacSNMP, but apparently it is only a

Subject: Strange crash and SadMAc and 'resource'
My Duo hates me!!! Can anyone tell me why the following might have happened to
me yesterday?...
I brought my Duo out of sleep-mode, but then noticed that it was reacting VERY
slowly and wouldn't get faster, so I restarted it. BUT, then I got a
floppy-disk-question-mark symbol. I restarted again (ctrl-command-start) and
got
the same. So I used the panic button at the back of the Duo...and got the
message (translated from Swedish) 'temporary system/bus error - turn off all
extensions and restart'. I duly restartd and this time I got a SADMAC!!
SadMac codes were 0000000F, 00000063. (I cannot find code 63 in any of the
SadMac lists I have access to). SadMac wouldn't go away.
Once home again, I attached my external floppy drive, and booted from a backup
system diskette. Tested the harddrive with DiskFirstAid, DDDiskTester and
DDVerify/Repair, which all said 'all's well'. Tried to install a new system on
the harddisk, using the original system diskettes, but got the error
(translated
>From Swedish) 'a write-protected resource cannot be replaced'. What
write-protected resource?? I renamed the old system folder, so that the
installation wouldn't have anything to replace in an old 'system' folder, and
tried again to no avail.
I then compressed everything on the hard disk with DiskDoubler (don't ask me
why, it was just a feeling I had) and put it all in the trash. THEN I removed
everything one-by-one from the trash and put it back on the hard disk. I
deliberately left one or two dispensable files in the trash (randomly chosen)
and then emptied the trash. Voila, the write-protected resource, whatever it
may
have been, was gone, and a new system could be installed without further
problems.
Any bright ideas out there?? I'd be grateful!

Thanks to all those who replied on my query regarding Apple's Japanese
Language Kit 7.1 vs. Kanji Talk 7.1. It appears that the primary
differences between the two, are that the JLK does not make all of the finder
menus and dialogs appear in Japanese, and the JLK has two less kanji TT
fonts. The price difference is tremendous: $195 for the JLK from Mac
Warehouse to ~$800+ for Kanji Talk 7.1. (KT7.1 does ship standard with every
mac sold in Japan, however.)
Thanks again to all who replied. My choice has been to save the extra

Subject: The lowdown on RamDisks and Spinning disks
Thank you to all who responded to my question about RamDisks and spinning down
the harddisk! (especially Fearghas and Avram)
Opinions are many and varied regarding Ram Disks. CPU from Connectix was
recommended (and gets a fairly good review in the Mac press), whilst others
felt
that the memory control panel was sufficient.
If you have lots of Ram, then an unusual (in that I've never read about it
anywhere else) solution is to increase the size of your Disk-cache, so that
there is enough room for system and whatever application you want to use to
load
directly into memory. I haven't tried this out completely yet, as my Duo's
been
playing up, but my attempts thus far have been positive. NOTE HOWEVER that if,
like me, you only have 8Mb RAM, the maximum for the disk-cache is 2560k, which
ISN't enough to run more than the system from, so you will still need a
RamDisk
of some sort for applications.
SpinD FKEY works fine for me when running on battery.

You can get the appropriate PPD file from a number of places; the horse's
mouth being ftp.adobe.com (/pub/adobe/PPDFiles). The readme file notes:
PPD files for Hewlett-Packard printers that are not present here must be
obtained directly from Hewlett-Packard. Telephone: (303) 353-7650
I have used the HPIIP522.PPD file with my IIP printer with the Adobe

There is also a way to obtain these files by email to
